Mount Mansfield State Forest

This state forest contains four state parks— Little River State Park, Smugglers' Notch State Park, Underhill State Park and Waterbury Center State Park, as well as the highest peak in Vermont, Mount Mansfield, standing at 4,393 feet tall. There are campgrounds as well as alpine and cross-country skiing opportunities, plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as rock climbing and ice climbing for the adventurous.

Mount Mansfield

A view near the summit of Mount Mansfield.

Clouds rolled in shortly before reaching the summit.

There's a lot of trails that lead to the summit here, and some continue on at various lengths so you can traverse the "face" of the mountain and see the Chin, the Nose, the Upper and Lower Lip, and the Forehead. If you want to explore the whole face you can take the Mount Mansfield Loop trail. We took the Sunset Ridge trail to the Chin at the recommendation of the park ranger, who advised it due to mud and melting snow at the time. The trails here are rocky and very slippery in the rain. Highly recommended for its panoramic views at the summit.
